There Will Be Blood & Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon

The Story

"There Will Be Blood," directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, is a historical epic about Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day Lewis), an oilman who is as insatiable as he is ruthless. The film is loosely based on the novel "Oil!" by Upton Sinclair, which was loosely based on the life of Edward L. Doheny, of Teapot Dome infamy. Daniel's greed leads him down a path of moral decay and isolation.

The Wine

Chilean Cabernet Sauvignons, like Tagua's, are celebrated for their bold flavors, structured tannins, and deep complexity. On the nose, you'll detect blackcurrant, dark cherry, and hints of tobacco, cedar, and spice. On the palate, Tagua Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied, moderate acidity, with a smooth, velvety texture. This wine embodies strength and depth.

Why They Match

  1. Complexity and Darkness: The film delves into the darkness of human nature, greed, betrayal, and moral corruption. Similarly, Tagua Cabernet Sauvignon offers a complex flavor profile with dark fruit, earthy undertones, and hints of spice.

  2. Intensity and Power: Both the film and the wine are marked by their intensity. "There Will Be Blood" is a gripping narrative about power and ambition, while Tagua Cabernet Sauvignon is a powerful wine with bold flavors that command attention.

  3. Elemental Forces: The film’s portrayal of the elemental forces of oil and earth parallels the deep, earthy qualities found in Tagua Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine’s notes of tobacco, cedar, and dark fruit mirror the raw, primal energy that drives the film’s plot and characters.
