The Martian & Australian Cabernet Sauvignon

Nobody should be surprised I picked a red for a story set on Mars.

The Story

Mark Watney, a NASA astronaut, finds himself stranded on Mars. Against all odds, the narrative balances his peril with humor, largely due to Watney's charm. His resourcefulness and indomitable spirit are on full display as he faces one challenge after another, from growing food in Martian soil to finding ways to communicate with Earth.

The movie, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon, is fine but the book, written by Andy Weir, is amazing, especially the audiobook narrated by R.C. Bray, but good luck finding a copy...

The Wine

Hailing from Southern Australia, Citadel's Cabernet Sauvignon is a bold, medium-bodied red wine that tastes of blackberries, cherries, and oak. What it lacks in complexity, it makes up for in drinkability.

Why They Pair Well

  1. Resilience: The film's theme of survival against all odds parallels the robust nature of Cabernet Sauvignon, a grape that thrives in various climates and produces wines with a strong, enduring character.

  2. Accessibility: It's hard to find a red wine more straightforward and drinkable than Citadel's Cabernet Sauvignon. Similarly, the Martian is fun, first and foremost - smart too, but never at the expense of a good time.

  3. A New World Wine for a New World: Just as the wine hails from regions known for innovation and exploration of the winemaking process, Mark Watney's journey on Mars embodies the spirit of venturing into the unknown (as does "The Martian's" publication history, for that matter). Both push boundaries and do the unexpected.

In summary, both "The Martian" and Citadel's Cabernet Sauvignon share themes of resilience, accessibility, and boldness.

What wine would you pair with "The Martian?"
